“This file contains letters to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles from William Marsden, an orientalist and numismatist who lived and worked in Fort Marlborough, Sumatra 1770-1779. He published a History of Sumatra in 1783 and had a reputation as both a talented writer and a scholar of zoology, botany, linguistics, and geography. In these letters he writes to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles on matters of Malay culture, history and language. He was writing his Dictionary of the Malayan Language (1812) at the period of this correspondence and questions Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles about vocabulary and pronunciation. He also requests a drawing of a buffalo and acknowledges the receipt of manuscripts. He specifically questions Sir Thomas Stamford about the infamous 'upas tree' and describes the topography of Lake Toba"--Provided by the British Library., Mss Eur D742/2)
