“This file contains a collection of letters from Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles to William Brown Ramsay during the period of his position at Lieutenant-Governor of Java. In these letters Raffles describes incidents and matters of administration to his friend. He also petitions support in England concerning his rank and mentions his salary. He also includes information about his health and that of his wife, Olivia who died November 1814. These letters also cover the period in which Raffles worked with Colonel Robert Rollo Gillespie who brought accusations against Raffles in council. The letters discuss the details and consequences of these accusations which resulted in a condemnation of Raffles actions from the Directors"--Provided by the British Library., Mss Eur D742/20)
